Some Thoughts About My Work

"Painting for me is pleasure—the smell of the paint, the richness of its color, the physical act of making a painting. The process is a kind of dance.

I begin by choosing the surface I want to paint on—canvas, wood panel, paper—its size and orientation. Then, with a few colors in mind and a challenge I want to meet, I start making some random strokes. Whatever I do first changes immediately, suggesting what to do next. In this way the painting and I collaborate on what it is going to become; a process by which chance is assisted by choice.

For me, the magic of painting happens when, after applying paint and wiping it off, perhaps hundreds of times, there is that moment when—suddenly—the surface that was once inanimate, comes alive.”
